Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 in which he loved betting on different card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting very aggressive in these particular card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little while and moved away to New York to play some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard's 1st 2 years were difficult as he played extensive hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he might better his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus more on poker.

The real improvement in his skills began when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would frequently play against each other. He was able to access a number of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking abilities. Howard used these strategy concepts in the game of No-Limit hold'em.

He also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. He told Annie to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. She is one of the strongest female players the poker world has ever seen. Howard moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
