Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It's a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in popularity so quickly.

Omaha hi/lo begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of betting follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many entrants often get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold 'Em, where the board can be everyone's hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of everyone's, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same approach in nearly all poker games.

The lower hand is more complicated, but really free's up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don't count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.

Although it seems complicated at first, after a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the base subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha hi low offers an amazing array of wagering choices and seeing that you have many individuals battling for the high hand, and several shooting for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is worth your time to play Omaha/8.
