Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha/8 begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering follows where players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. A further round of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. a further round of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The players will have to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of players can get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can be everyone's hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It's the best hand out of everyone's, it doesn't matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It's the very same concept in nearly all poker games.

A low hand is more complicated, but really free's up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don't count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there's no low hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.

It may seem complicated at the outset, after a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play simply enough.
