Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better starts like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A round of wagering ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. After all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many entrants often get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can be everyone's hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to use precisely three cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It's the best possible hand out of everyone's, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It's the same concept in almost every poker game.

The lower hand is more complex, but really free's up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don't count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there's no low hand presented, the high hand takes the complete pot.

Although it seems complicated initially, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the base subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an exciting assortment of betting possibilities and seeing that you have many individuals battling for the high hand, and many trying for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it's worth your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
