Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better starts just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. After all the players have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of entrants often get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can make up everyone's hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It's the strongest possible hand out of everyone's, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same notion in almost every poker game.

A lower hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don't count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don't count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand wins the complete pot.

Although it seems difficult at first, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the basic nuances of play simply enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 offers an amazing array of betting options and seeing that you have many individuals battling for the high hand, along with several battling for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a lot of outs and actions, it's worth your time to compete in Omaha High-Low.
