Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It's a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting follows in which players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of betting ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of entrants often get baffled. Unlike Holdem, where the board can make up everyone's hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use exactly three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It's the strongest possible hand out of every player's, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It's the very same notion in almost all poker games.

A low hand is more complicated, but certainly free's up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don't count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand takes the complete pot.

Although it seems complicated at the start, after a few hands you will be able to get the basic nuances of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha hi low offers an amazing assortment of betting possibilities and owing to the fact that you have several players battling for the high, as well as several battling for the low. If you prefer a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is worth your time to compete in Omaha hi/lo.
