Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha hi/lo starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A round of wagering follows in which players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of betting happens. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The players will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of players get baffled. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can be everyone's hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of everyone's, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It's the same concept in just about every poker game.

The lower hand is more difficult, but certainly free's up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there's no low hand available, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

Although it seems complex at the outset, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the base nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an overwhelming assortment of betting possibilities and seeing that you have several players trying for the high, and many shooting for the low. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
