Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It's a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha hi-low starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering follows at which point the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some entrants get flustered. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone's hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player's, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It's the identical notion in nearly every poker game.

A lower hand is more difficult, but really free's up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don't count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem difficult initially, after a few hands you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an exciting range of betting possibilities and owing to the fact that you have several individuals battling for the high, as well as a few shooting for the low hand. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it's not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
